Kopupaka Crib Bridges

Kopupaka, Auckland

Client: Auckland Council
Completion: Ongoing
Services: Procurement, Tender Evaluation, Engineer to the Contract – Construction Monitoring  & Contract Management
Scope: 2 x curved timber crib retaining and bridge structures, soft landscaping, concrete paths.
Budget: $3M

The Kopupaka Reserve Crib Bridge project involves the delivery of two timber crib structures that cross the Sakaria stream within Kopupaka Reserve, Massey.  The bridges will provide a pedestrian link between the previously completed stages of the Kopupaka Open Spaces project and the Kopupaka Reserve playspace and free play areas, which are currently under construction.

The curved crib structures are inspired on hinaki, traditional Maori woven baskets associated with gathering food resources from wetlands.  The structures are designed by the collaborative team involved with the award-winning landscaping and stormwater project that was completed at the north-eastern section of the Kopupaka Reserve in 2016.  The bridges are curved, complex, and elegant.  They will weave both figuratively and literally throughout the reserve.

The Development Programme Office within Auckland Council has commissioned Urban Solutions to provide the professional services to deliver these structures and associated finishing works.  Our services include procurement – preparation of tender documentation, contract/RFT writing, tender evaluation and negotiation, and the Engineer to the Contract role – construction supervision and contract management.

A high degree of compliance with the comprehensive land use and streamworks consents is paramount throughout this project.  Temporary stream diversions are required due to the large upstream catchment areas as well as significant erosion and sediment control to protect the surrounding ecological areas.

Whilst administering and supervising the NZS3910 Contract, multiple management plans are to be enforced including construction, safety, quality, contaminated land, chemical treatment, traffic management, fish relocation management, and environmental management plans.  Urban Solutions has extensive experience in delivering similar complex community infrastructure projects like this one for our local government clients. We have a real passion for contributing to the success of a sustainable, adaptive, and ecologically healthy city.
